Mohair is the long hair of an angora goat that has a silky quality to it. Mohair yarn is really thin and fuzzy and I assumed it would be delicate, but the yarn I purchased was the opposite. I've made some lovely mohair shawls for auctions at the Oregon Right to Life annual fund raisers. The main trick I use is a sett of 4 epi, and weave a balanced fabric. The shawls are like clouds of color. But yeah, not even as a bit added to a scarf would I use mohair - continuous nightmare if that strand has others to snuggle up against.

For some time I've been talking about a large mohair bedspread I was weaving from hand spun mohair yarns. I finally completed it and here is the story of the weaving in pictures. What is Mohair? Mohair, prized for its brilliant colour and sheen, is known as the diamond fibre. Mohair dates back to the biblical times and the garments of the wise men were probably made of this fibre. Mohair comes from the fibre of the Angora goat. It is sheared every 4 - 6 months. Mohair grease is harder to remove than lanolin from wool.

When you are weaving with mohair you may have to pull a little harder when the shuttle comes out of the shed as it is setting the opposite side.

Weaving with mohair for the first time was a "learning opportunity," to say the least. Really, "learning opportunity" is my code for "not as easy as I expected." Though I was using two very different yarns, the pattern called for plain weave, so I thought, "how hard could it be?"
